Nearly 50 mentors in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) gathered for a two-and-a-half-day meeting on April 5-7, in Arlington, Virginia, to develop a plan of action to address the continued need and importance of STEM mentoring for the nation’s STEM workforce.  

Successful Practices: Enabling STEM Scholars with Disabilities

At an early age, Alexandra Lewis loved learning how biological systems function. At the age of 13, she told her educators that she had developed Stargardt’s Disease—causing her to become legally blind and thereby covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Elijah Spiro’s dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred when he developed Type 1 diabetes. His passion for aeronautics, however, drove him to find a new way to contribute to the space race through an internship at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
