Activities ranging from a resume contest to a thank-a-mentor “selfie” photo contest marked the observance of National Mentoring Month (NMM) in the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) community. During the month, students and mentors were encouraged to reflect on the value of mentoring and to demonstrate gratitude to their mentors.

The resume contest was sponsored by the University of Washington’s DO-IT program, a PAESMEM recipient in 1997. The program helps prepare students with disabilities to study and progress in STEM careers. As part of the resume contest, students with disabilities across the country received advice on creating strong resumes from DO-IT’s award-winning mentoring community.

The “selfie” photo contest was sponsored by Cal NERDS, a joint mentoring initiative of the California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the University of California’s Leadership Excellence Through Advanced Degrees (UC LEADS) program. Dr. Sheila Humphreys (PAESMEM 2012) serves as a graduate school coach for Cal NERDS, which is directed by Humphreys’ former mentee, Diana Lizarraga. The contest challenged Cal NERDS mentees to submit a “selfie” photo with their mentors as part of “Thank-a-Mentor Day,” Jan. 21. Winners of the “selfie” photo contest won $25 gift certificates. To cap their activities, Cal NERDS held a Mentor Appreciation Luncheon on Jan. 29.

In another activity, the contributions of the late Dr. Ella Lee Kelley, the original representative of the Timbuktu Academy’s PAESMEM organizational honor (2002), were lauded by students and staff of the organization in posthumous thank-you for her life-long efforts. The wife of Dr. Diola Bagayoka (PAESMEM 1996), Dr. Kelley also supported the STEM success of students at Southern University and A&M (SUBR) as a professor of chemistry and in academic leadership positions at the university for more than 30 years.

Throughout the month, NSF and PAESMEM.net posted tweets and other social media updates about the activities and accomplishments of the PAESMEM community, including quotes about mentoring from the first PAESMEM winners in 1996.
